What is this course about?

Every day, young people encounter a flood of media messages about climate change, sustainability, and environmental issues. But how can they tell what’s true, what’s misleading, and what’s designed to manipulate? In the era of digital noise and climate disinformation, developing media and information literacy (MIL) is more crucial than ever.

This online course was developed as part of the project Media and Information Literacy for climate and environmental topics (MILGreen). The course responds to the growing need for accessible and practical education that empowers young people to critically consume and engage with media content about green topics. As youth turn to social media and digital platforms as primary sources of information, youth work must evolve to help them navigate misinformation and eco-related media narratives.

The course provides theoretical background and practical tools to support young people in becoming critical thinkers and informed digital citizens. It explores topics such as how media shapes perceptions of climate change, identifying misinformation and disinformation, understanding the role of algorithms, and using media for environmental advocacy.

Structured as an interactive and youth-friendly online learning experience, the course includes:
• Modules on media literacy in the context of climate and environmental topics
• Country-specific case studies and examples
• Practical exercises to develop fact-checking and critical analysis skills
• Tools and strategies for using media as a force for positive environmental change

Through this course, learners will improve their ability to critically assess digital content and actively participate in the creation of a more sustainable and informed online environment.

This course dives into how media influences our views on the environment, how to spot fake news and greenwashing, and how to become a smart, eco-aware media user. It’s packed with interactive activities, videos, real-life examples, and practical tips to help you take action in your own community.
Whether you’re just getting started or already passionate about the environment, this course will help you boost your media skills and turn knowledge into action.
